1. A false belief among users is that the smoke from hookah is less dangerous than that of cigarettes. This is wrong! However since people think this is true, it gives a false sense of security and reduces concerns about true health effects. Doctors at institutions including the Mayo Clinic have stated that “use of hookah is equally detrimental to a person’s health as smoking cigarettes,” and a study by the World Health Organization also confirmed these findings.

2. Hookah use may lead to infertility. Yes, you read that correctly.

3. In a one-hour (1 hour) hookah session, users consume around 100 to 200 times the smoke and about 70 times the nicotine as they do in one cigarette.

4. Water pipe smokers are seven times (7 times) more likely than non-smokers to show signs of gum disease and mouth cancer.

5. There are over 250 different kinds of Hookah flavors, and that number continues to rise.

6. Each hookah session (commonly referred to as “a sesh”) consists of 50 to 200 inhalations that each range from 0.15 to 0.50 liters of smoke.

7. Hookah users may become infected with herpes.

8. Chilling with friends and smoking hookah may seem fun and put you in the “cool group.” However, the reality is thirty (30) minutes of smoking hookah is the same as chain-smoking half a pack of cigarettes.

9. Hookah contains 69 different carcinogens.

10. Hookah use may cause impotence. If you don’t know what this means, then here’s your definition: “Impotence is a common problem among men characterized by the consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse or the inability to achieve ejaculation, or both.” – medicinenet.

if you liked typing and the fact was typing 35 words a day can cause sever bone disease is it gonna make you chabge??
cigeratte smoking not only causes gum disease and various types of cancers but also spoils your teeth. so would you prefer smoking a pack of cigerattes everyday or smoke hooka once a month??
hookha are priced anywhere between 150 to 300 rupees indian currency wheras a cigeratte is available at a mere 50 rupees a pack!! so would you advice cigeratte smoking or “a sesh”

  4. Steve says:

What do you mean by ‘hookah comes in many flavours’? Is there a special kind of tobacco?
Hmmm, all this time I thought people would smoke hashish in them! You would think a shish bar would serve up some opium or hash!

  5. Hannah says:

    lmaoooo @ vi

  6. Laka says:

wow, i really didn’t know any of that… and vi, well, unlike you, many people (me included) really thought that hookah was less dangerous than smoking cigarettes… so, yes, i appreciate the person who came up with these facts…

  7. Rohan Saha says:

I don’t understand why is smoking illegal in public when hookah is not? If hookah was as dangerous as ciggies or more dangerous than it should’ve been the other way round?

  8. inyourfaces says:

    hahahahaha in all u smoker’s faces….. sorry….but ahahahahahaha

  9. rahul says:

ohhh fuk is it realy true ……

i use to being eddicted to hooka ……

  10. Jen says:

you can get herpes from hookah?

  11. Z says:

    @rahul its Addicted…

@Steve The Tobacco is flavored to taste good. And lots of people use it with cannabis, myself included. If that is the case and there is no tobacco, then it is the same as smoking out of a bong, minor tar accumulation but other than that the above are all false for hasish. But if you mix it with the tobacco, then yes, see above.

Hookah with flavored tobacco is such a treat for me, and the fact that I only do it twice a year shows that it is FAR LESS dangerous than me smoking cigarettes on a daily basis. It really comes down to frequency of use. And the herpes comment, that is only because SOOO many people do not use guards when going to hookah bars, if your bar doesn’t have them, then don’t go. Good ones will have them and will prevent you from sharing contact with anyone…and if you are at a house, just be careful who you smoke with…cold sores=herpes

  12. Jason says:

    HOLY SHIT….. I’M NEVER DOING HOOKAH AGAIN…

  13. B says:

    Ditto with what Jason says!

  14. Brendan says:

aahhh i’m scared. i tried it for like a second and only did like 3 inhalations but i’m still scared. aaah

  15. cezane says:

damn!!!! i dint knew these things…..

  16. Dang says:

So in short that means that by smoking hookah you become incapable of banging chicks… Why don’t they say so instead of using scientific words like ‘impotency’… Goddamit…!

  17. redninam says:

wow i didnt know that i always felt that it was safer…………….thanks

  18. Saad says:

Lol number 7 is utter bollock but really funny :D

  19. Mihir says:

Thank god i given up hooka this year only…..

  20. Devin says:

I thought this was gonna be about smoking weed out of a hookah which i do almost everyday but smoking tobacco isnt that bad out of it its pretty good especially with weed

  21. Shrek says:

that ws quite enlightening..thnx a lot for takin efforts to type this..

  22. John says:

He Rere, there isnt that much nicotine, why do u think people arnt addicted to hookah! people smoke cigs because they need their nicotine fix, if there is 70 times more then a cig, then ud be addicted the first time.

  23. Drew says:

Don’t smoke, it’s bad for you.
Don’t drink, it’s bad for you.
    Don’t F–k, it’s bad for you.
and if you do none of the above, but want to step out and have a nice run, don’t because even that can be bad for you.
Live your life and enjoy while you can, before just living itself is politically incorrect too.

  24. Jackie says:

ahahahaaaaaa. thank god hookah makes me sick.

  25. Da Buddha says:

Yea, it definitely surprises people who smoke hookah that the smoothness is actually causing damage. But John above has some points. I wonder how nicotine ties into this.

  26. krishna says:

hookah contains less nicotin n is tar free.. so it is safe enf 2 smoke it… da only harm is da rise of CO2 in ur body. bt it cn b taken care of by consuming enf of water

  27. Anesah says:

    Hey, folks

I just wanted to clear up a few things, because there were quite a few misunderstandings.

First, tar. Tar is a natural byproduct of the breakdown of organic matter by burning. Neither cigarettes nor shisha tobacco contain any tar before ignition, and every organic material that is routinely smoked deposits some volume of tar into the lungs while being burned and smoked, including tobacco, marijuana, and opium and its derivatives in varying quantities. I am not sure about the relative quantities of the tar in these, but be sure that if you are smoking any plant-based substance, you are depositing tar in your mouth, throat, and lungs in some volume. That being said, without an impartial, peer-reviewed study on the health effects of the tar contained in hookah, there is no way to tell if it is better or worse for you than any other smoked material. There is one caveat: I remember reading a study recently (I am unable to find it at this time and should not be quoted on this) that said that vaporization of the plant material at sufficient temperature to prevent smoking bypassed tar(the study concerned “toxins” in particular) from being produced. If anyone can confirm this, I believe that NORML had the study on their website, and it pertained specifically to marijuana vaporization.

Second, herpes. Herpes is a large class of viruses, but this article concerns in particular two viruses: Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV1) and Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV2). Let’s get the two straight so we can discuss what the author meant.

HSV1 is an extremely common virus, occurring in up to 90% of the population of the world (though more conservative estimates are 30-60%). HSV1 is more commonly known as fever blisters or cold sores; the virus causes those annoying little sores that some people get on their lips or inside their mouths from time to time. The sores usually look like red or white sores that you feel before you see. Eventually, the sores burst, or “weep” painfully, before healing after about two weeks. The most common method of transmission of HSV1 is from parents to infants, and the vast majority of those of us reading this are already infected, were infected by our parents, and will pass the virus on to our own infants through close contact when we have our own children. The virus is mostly harmless, though there are a few complications that can arise. The virus lives on a nerve in our cheek, and usually lies there dormant, causing no symptoms at all. In fact, most people after infection and two weeks of initial symptoms as an infant will never get another cold sore again for their whole lives! Some of us that aren’t so lucky can take a newer class of antiviral medications that shortens outbreaks from two weeks to about ten days.

On the other hand, HSV2, also known as genital herpes, infects about 15% of our population, but is similarly asymptomatic in a large portion of the infected population. All of us know about this kind of herpes: it is a Sexually Transmitted Infection that is transmitted primarily through sexual contact. If your parter is infected, the best method of protecting yourself is to make sure your partner is on antiviral medications and to monitor outbreaks. It is possible, though unlikely, to be infected when an outbreak is not visible. Remember, virus particles are invisible to the naked eye–they are many, many times smaller than cells, and infect cells as a means of proliferating themselves. HSV2 limits itself to infecting humans in locations mostly below the belt, the genitals and anus. It presents as red, raised sores that eventually burst (or “weep”) and heal shortly thereafter. The prognosis for HSV2 is good; apart from the social stigma associated with having an STI, there are essentially no harmful effects associated with the virus other than more outbreaks. Women and men are still capable of bearing children, though there must be special care taken to prevent infection of the infant (especially the infant’s eyes).

For those of you that are interested, the Herpes virus is responsible for many different diseases, such as chicken pox, shingles, and quite a few others. All of us have quite a few strains of the herpes virus floating around in our bodies, living on various nerves. Even those of you that are younger and haven’t had chicken pox have an inactivated herpes virus(from a vaccine) grown in a chicken embryo living on your spinal cord that has taught your immune system how to protect itself from the chicken pox!

So, what does the author mean? Well, if you’re one of those lucky people that didn’t get HSV1 from your parents, well, you might get a cold sore. If one of your friends happens to have a cold sore, there is a chance, and that chance is actually pretty small. Furthermore, why don’t you just swipe a few extra mouthpieces the next time you go to the shisha bar you frequent? Keep one in your purse or pocket, and use it only for yourself. Good old shisha engineering goes a long way to preventing infection not only with harmless viruses, but colds, flus, mononucleosis, and everything else!

Oh, and you might get HSV2 if your HSV2-infected friend is having an oubreak, rubs the hose on his or her nether regions, and then you do a pole dance with the shisha. If you do, please, report it to someone; I think that would be one for the record books :)

I am honestly interested to read the author’s sources; I am not calling the author a liar, but in particular the double-fact about impotence interests me. I would like to know where this information comes from, and what data supports it. I hope I’ve helped everyone, and I welcome comments and questions to your friendly shisha engineer at anesah@gmail.com

  28. Wendy says:

I’ve done it the first time yesterday… it does not stop me from doing it again. I’m a woman so I have no problem with impotency. It’s a little too late for the herpes, as well…. HAHAHHAHAHA

the best part is that I am not addicted to shishas are all. they are not addictive and don’t breath in too heavily otherwise it will harm your lungs. please breath in gently and let the smoke out gently. it’s nice to have some tea or cheesecake or mousse cake along with your shisha with the company of good friends…. make sure to bring water with you, as shisha can dehydrate you. The water will also make the shisha’s experience much more comfortable.

most persons in the middle east does shisha. the Philippine and India uses shisha as well. we have more deaths involving lung cancer in cigarette smokers than any death-related cases from hookah or shisha. Shisha is a great general entertainment among friends and family. The fumes from shisha does not irritate third party members unlike cigarette harsh fumes.

enjoy yourselves, you live once, and try out some shisha while you can.

I am a law student in north america and I do not discourage the use of shisha. Please do not abuse it, have it occasionally or on a special occasion with friends and family. If you have prior lung damage from illness or diseases, please refrain from using shisha (such as bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, post-infection of the lungs etc… these diseases can cause scarring in the lung tissues)

some articles suggest a strong negative approach to shisha to discourage MOST people from abusing the substance, not to stop your entire usage.

It’s an overused scare tactical plan to either reduce the amount of previous shisha smokers and/or discourage the usage of abusing shisha.

Just so you know, if you have never been ‘high’ before, shisha is the most legal way to do it, just slightly… and prescribed narcotics… which I have both.

    good day to everyone ^__^;;
